Argentina General Information For The Hunter

ARGENTINA, is fast becoming the next hot spot in the world for hunters willing to travel.  The country's economy has been very stable the last ten years and the exchange rate is currently 1 to 3 for the dollar and peso.  It is safe for travelers, with a low crime rate and virtually no drug traffic.  It offers 17 big game species and world class wing shooting for doves, ducks and geese.

CLIMATE: The country has a wide variety of climates ranging from north to south and from Winter (June-August) to Summer (December-February).  Hunting areas are located mainly in the center of the country.   Temperatures in this part can range from 23 degrees to 68 degrees, during the winter and from 59 degrees to 86 degrees in the summertime.

CLOTHING: It is recommended to bring dark camo patterns.  Waterproof clothing, hat, boots and raincoat if your camo is not waterproof.  Bring some short sleeve shirts in case the weather turns warm.

GUN PERMITS: Argentina is friendly regarding the importation of firearms by hunters.  However, you should always register your guns with US Customs prior to leaving the country to prove that you purchased them here at home.  All it takes is to declare them upon arrival at Buenos Aires International Airport in Ezeiza.  You will be directed to the Police office where you will fill out the necessary papers (5 minutes) and you are done.  Well almost, you must pay $30 Peso (about $10 ) per gun and the permit is good for 60 days.

TRANSPORTATION:  We can do your itinerary for you or you can do your own.  Our charge for this service is 10% of the cost.  You will be met at the airport by the outfitters representative holding a sign (you can't miss it) with your name on it.  They will ferry you back and forth between the various airports and hunting camps which is included in the pricing.

VISA:  If you are a US citizen you do not need a VISA,  however, you need to have your passport.

GUNS:  Recommended is a 12ga. shotgun, however 20 ga. is also acceptable.  Bring more than one for Dove shooting due to the heavy volumn of daily shooting.  Steel shot is not necessary for waterfowl so bring a Mod or IC choke.  In case you do not want to bring your own guns, you can rent them for $30 US per day.   Shells are also sold for $9 per box US and we recommend not bringing the additional baggage weight.  Rifles recommended are .243 and up for Big Game except for the Buffalo where a .375 or larger is highly recommended.

ACCOMMODATIONS: All lodging and meals during the hunt are included in the daily rates.

1000 ROUNDS A DAY TO DOVES!

LOCATION: Reserva La Colorada Ranch, Province of La Pampa, 1 hour flight from Buenos Aires.
SEASONS:

Doves-- All year - Best times are when the crops are mature, from March to September.

Partridge--May to August.

HUNTING:  The day begins at 6.30 a.m. After breakfast we depart for one of the fields, to be ready at around 8 a.m. when the doves start flying. We shoot nearly all day long, and stopping for lunch at midday (served in the field).  Generally, the doves fly from the woods into the plantations for feeding, but they can come basically from any direction.  Hunters are placed every 100 yards and everybody goes with a guide/helper to help for spotting the birds, bring the shells and to pick up the doves.

There are 3 species: 2 species of doves and pigeons. All are hunted in the same fields.

The doves will stop flying around 6 p.m., when we will drive back to La Colorada for a snack and a few drinks.

At no additional cost, hunting can be complemented with partridge (using dogs) and vizcachas (an interesting mammal resembling a big rabbit that lives in communal tunnels and are nocturnal).  Also big game species like wild boars, cougars and red stag are available in this area.

NO LIMIT GEESE HUNTING!

70Geeseinoneday.jpg (48787 bytes)

LOCATION: Bahía Blanca, South of Buenos Aires Province, 1 hour flight from Buenos Aires International Airport.

SEASON: May to August.

HUNTING: It is performed on the feeding areas (typically grain fields) where geese fly into at dawn. We depart from the house at 6:00AM to be ready at the posts at 7:30AM, when the birds start to enter the fields. Camouflaged blinds are made every day in different fields, where also decoys are used to attract the birds. They will fly for 2 or 3 hours up to around 9:00AM, and shooting is intense during that short period. The geese come in groups of between 10 and 30 birds, and for that reason, up to 3 hunters may be placed in one same blind.

Hunters may expect to get, at least 40 geese a day, getting some times up to 120 birds per hunter.

Geese hunting will be complemented in the afternoons with Dove, Duck and Partridge hunting.

BIG GAME HUNTING AT LA PAMPA

WaterBuffalo.jpg (65406 bytes)

LOCATION: Reserva La Colorada Ranch, Province of La Pampa, 1 hour flight from Buenos Aires.

SEASON: We hunt all year round, although the only period when all species are available is February-August.

HUNTING AND SPECIES AVAILABLE: General-- Most of the area consists of wooded forests in which all the species live. Normally, they will only come out to the grain fields to feed (some during daylight and some at night).

·          Red stag is typically stalked inside the woods during the rut season or in the open fields after the rut. Hunting is conducted during early mornings or late afternoon until after dark. Red stags are natural from this area and the best trophies of the country come from this Province. This hunt may be free ranged or fenced.

·          Wild boar is spotted only at night, by walking in the cornfields or in blinds at the waterholes.

·          Buffalo herds live in the woods and they only come out at night. They have to be found inside the forest (sometimes on horseback) and then stalked to try to make (normally) a 30-50 yards shot. These animals weight sometimes over 1000Kg (2200 pounds), and although they are an introduced species, there’s no fence that can stop them!

·          Puma (Cougar) is a different hunt. We regularly beat them in different places of our ranch and in neighbor ranches. In this way we keep them in the surroundings of our property. The usual technique is by tracking them using specially trained small dogs that will follow the cougar’s track during daylight. We can also wait in a blind at the bait.

                                            9(1).jpg (1081846 bytes)
Live young Puma - 1 1/2 years old

·          Fallow and Axis deer are stalked during their activity hours (mornings and afternoons) when they also normally come out of the forest for feeding. These animals live in a big fenced area.

·          European Mouflon, Feral Goat, Blackbuck, Feral Sheep and Four horned Ram are stalked during daylight and hunters have to be prepared for long range shots as these animals live in open areas and have a very good eyesight.

·          Collared and White Lipped Peccaries live in groups (sometimes up to 15 animals per group) and our dogs track them in the forest. They are among the most aggressive animals we have and the hunt may turn dangerous if not properly done. Even the pumas never attack them, as they are dangerous. Although they are from the family of the pigs, they do no have the same upward shape in the tusks; instead, they have their teeth more like a carnivore, so that they can cause deep injuries with their bites.

Ø       Rifles:  Recommended .30-06/.308 or larger for most species; however the .375 is preferred for buffalo hunting.   Soft-point bullets are ideal for short range shots (boar, cougar, peccaries, axis, fallow and Red stag); long range bullets (e.g., Nosler Ballistic Tips) for European Mouflons, Feral Goats, Blackbucks, Feral Sheep and Multi-horned Rams.

Ø       Muzzleloaders:  They are welcomed for all species.

Ø       Bow hunters:  Ideal species are peccaries, cougars and boars.

First introduced fifteen years ago by the ranch owner, they have multiplied and spread so much throughout the area that they are now causing trouble in the extensive rice plantations. There are 3 different sub-species of buffalo in this property: the Murrah, the Mediterranean and the Jafarabandi.

The ranch has only been hunted for three years, and the buffalo population is now estimated at over 400, many of which are more than twenty years old! Argentine Safari.com is the first outfitter allowed on the ranch with permission to harvest twenty buffalo per year in order to keep a stable population and retain top quality trophies.
