Frequently asked questions about
OUTFITTER AGENCIES and OUTFITTERS:
Q-Why should I use the services of an OUTFITTER AGENCY, doesn't it cost me more money?
A-Outdoor Destinations, Inc. (ODI), will save you time and money by having already done the searching for a quality outfitter matching the criteria you have established. The Outfitter pays the commission not costing you anything additional. Also, ODI, will make travel arrangements, set an itinerary, Provide an equipment list, ask you questions that others would not think to ask, Provide you the opportunity to rate your experience and periodically provide for It's clients to put their names in a hat for a special prize. Eg. 1/2 price trip the following year.
Q-How do I know it will be a quality OUTFITTER?
A-ODI, invests in its future by working only with Top Quality Outfitters who perform and produce year after year. The agency future is at stake.
Q-Do I have to provide a deposit up front?
A-Yes, although how much depends entirely on the individual OUTFITTER. Most OUTFITTERS require anywhere from 30% to 50% deposits to reserve your date and until received you date is not reserved. The reason for this is that in a business where the time frame of opportunity to make a living is not only short but also regulated beyond the control of the OUTFITTER, it is necessary he/she is certain how many guests are booked and for what period. Without a deposit (your showing of intent) the OUTFITTER would never know who was coming until the day arrived and could not last very long in business. The balance of payment is due in a variety of ways and times. This is part of the information that ODI, will provide on all Outfitters.
Q-Is there any discount for paying in full up front?
A-Again this depends upon the individual OUTFITTER. Some Outfitters will offer a discount for full payment up front where others do not want full payment up front.
Q-What is the best time to hunt?
A-That is the million dollar question, and the only answer is complex at best. Some hunters prefer to hunt the rut (the exact rut dates are somewhat elusive), some like to hunt the moon phases, some like to hunt the second rut and so on. If you will make your date reasons known to ODI, we will know the approximate dates of the rut and second rut for each OUTFITTER. As well as, the Moon Phases in each Outfitters area for that year and recommend accordingly. Keeping in mind of course that you are playing the odds game and you don't always win.
Q-What guarantee do I have that I will get the game I am going after?
A-The only way anyone can honestly answer this question is NONE! On the other hand ODI, does have one OUTFITTER who does guarantee that you will have an opportunity to shoot a 4x4 Whitetail or Mule Deer or next years hunt is free !!! This, to say the least, is highly unusual.
Q-How do I know there is quality game in abundance at this OUTFITTERS place?
A-ODI, will only book for OUTFITTERS that practice solid conservation methods and practical game management. Someone from ODI will have personally been there during hunting season to look over the area, guides, food, lodging and most of all have done some hunting of their own to verify that what the OUTFITTER is selling, is as stated. This is also why utilizing the services of ODI, makes sense, so as not to be somewhere you don't want to be in a situation you paid for and cannot get out of.
Q-What is a Guided Hunt?
A-A guided hunt is when a Guide is afield (usually with 1 or 2 hunters) for the duration of the clients being in the field. They will pursue wounded game, will field dress and if desired Cape the animal for Taxidermy. In addition, the Guide will make suggestions on which animal to let go and which to take .In some instances where there are several animals all in a close area, the Guide will have the hunter wait until he is sure the Trophy animal is clear of other game. Some are usually available during dinner hour and afterwards to answer questions. Guides will offer some historical information on the game pursued, or the area of the hunt, the lore of the peoples where your are and other neat tidbits that make the adventure all that more pleasurable. PLEASE BE SURE TO TIP YOUR GUIDE, THIS IS THE MAINSTAY OF THEIR WAGES.
Q-What is a Semi-Guided Hunt?
A-Semi-Guided hunts come under many descriptions and it is important that you understand exactly what you are going to receive if you go on a semi-guided hunt. One of the descriptions is; they will take you to your stand in the morning, pick you up at a designated time, they may pursue and field dress your animal. They will usually be available around meal times to chat. However, please ask what this SEMI-GUIDED hunt includes and means as it can lead to differences of opinion.
Q-What is a Drop Camp Hunt?
A-This also is a term with different meanings to different OUTFITTERS. Usually in deer camps, the DROP CAMP is where you go for less expense. Usually lodging is provided, you are shown the land boundaries and some of the better areas to hunt. Your responsibilities include but are not limited to: food (and the preparation of it), bedding, stand, ladder or steps, GPS/Compass, pursuing game, field dressing and caping. These hunts are usually more for the experienced hunter and definitely not for the beginner. Also, this type of hunt can be inexpensive, fun and rewarding.
Q-How many hunting days, when should I arrive and when do I have to leave?
A-This will all be spelled out for you in the materials from ODI. Every OUTFITTER can and usually has his own hunt schedules to fit his own schedule, as well as the Airlines serving the area, Ferries sometimes come into play and so on. The average hunt is 5 days with some Special or Trophy hunts being 6 days. Then you run the gamut of different species, combination hunts and Slams. Most OUTFITTERS want you to arrive the afternoon prior to your first day of hunting and leave the morning after your last day of the hunt.
Q-How do I get my license and tags?
A-This varies from State to State, from Province to Province and from Country to Country. Make sure upon booking your trip with ODI, that this is one of the questions answered at that time.
